URGENT ACTION ALERT

YOUR ATTENDANCE IS CRUCIAL:
COMMUNITY MEETING ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd - 7:00pm
IVANHOE SCHOOL

IT'S YOUR CHANCE TO BE HEARD! The future of the Rowena corridor depends on it.
  • Three-story, 64-unit condo/retail complex planned for Rowena Ave.
  • 200 feet of Rowena buildings to be demolished, including the Coffee Table
  • Tract application hearing pending
  • Inappropriate scale and mass for the neighborhood
  • Character and integrity of Silver Lake threatened
Here's what you can do:
  • Download and distribute the Urgent Action Flyers
  • Attend the community meeting at Ivanhoe School, Wednesday February 22 @7:00pm
  • Demand that the project be scaled back!
  • Demand that traffic, pedestrian safety and parking issues on Rowena be addressed.
  • Email Councilmember TOM LABONGE and Chief Planning Deputy RENEE WEITZER or:
City Hall
200 North Spring Street, Room 480
LA, CA 90012
tel: (213) 485-3337

Community action does work! It deterred the 40-unit project on Angus. It sent the developers back to the drawing board to scale down the Derby/Louise's project. It can work for us, but ONLY WITH YOUR SUPPORT. ATTEND THE MEETING!

Does anyone care about the property rights of the people who have put capital at risk and who have invested time and money. If you think it so important to "preserve" the present condition on the property or make it "in scale" with the neighborhood, BUY IT! If the developer is abiding by the zoning laws why is it appropriate for the mob to determine what occurs on private property? What if someone told you that you can't develop YOUR property as long as you obey the laws. Something to thing about. Unfortunatly, I don't think these folks are doing any thinking - just feeling.

I can't imagine a Silver Lake resident writing this comment - unless she/he is a developer.

I posted news about this development at LAVoice.org. and I encourage you to go there and comment. Public dialogue among people on all sides of this issue could help raise awareness of the effects this development would have on Silver Lake.

Background:

I've lived in the 'hood for 18 years. I'm a former Ivanhoe parent, now a Marshall parent. For the last few years, I and a group of other middle-aged grumblers have occupied a corner of the Coffee Table every Thursday night.

So, I'm VERY interested.

OTHER than the Coffee table, what' slated for demolition? It appears, from the pics on this site, that the demolition starts with the Coffee Table on the west end and goes east from there. The bungalow court ("Ivanhoe terrace"?)
appears in the renderings, so i assume it's not slated for demo.

So, if I understand correctly, we'd be losing the "Blackburn Lodge"? Is ANYONE living in the neighborhood seriously claiming that this represents a loss of safety or neighborhood "vision"?

BTW, isn't there a HIGHER apartment building on Rowena just WEST of this location?

Just tryin' to get a clear picture of what's at stake here.

Just fill us in here:

What's going to be demolished, besides the Coffee Table? "Blackburn Lodge"? what else?

How many units are in the (relatively) high-rise apartment building on the south side of Rowena somewhat west of this location?

In response to Anonymous, the simple answer is "no." Every person who bought a home in Silver Lake put capital at risk and invested time and money - and thought. And they invested that time and money and thought in Silver Lake because it is such a unique and special place to live. This is why so many people are so concerned, or should I say "feel" so strongly about preserving their environment as much as they can from the impacts of large-scale developments. There is a movement to build bigger and higher; it's a reality that many L.A. communities are facing very nervously, as Gail Goldberg herself is well aware as well as most of the administrative personnel working in the various City Planning departments. What we are "feeling" (by the blogs I've been reading) is very real and very valid and deserves a little more thought and care (sorry to say) on your part. Regarding the suggestion to "buy it," I don't recall ever seeing a "for sale" sign on the property but I think Mr. Pagnone and Sislin et all could better answer that. Finally, I understand Mr. Pagnone is meeting with people in the community (your "mob"). Why? Because he is well aware he needs support for his project. The "mob" you refer to can determine what occurs on private property if it impacts them adversely. This is why it is important for people to attend on 2/22 and voice their concerns.

I don't know how many units that pink building has but I checked out lot sizes online and the 64-unit complex will take up 3 times what the pink building does in terms of land. And it's 3 stories high and goes up the hill at the back. That's a lot of space. I pity the poor people living behind. What's at stake is taking a loooooooong stretch of Rowena and turning it into a massive block of modern architecture that overpowers 1 story cottages either side. Not my kind of town. And with all those cars going in and out, shouldn't something be done to keep traffic flowing along Rowena?

i would only hope it would be a block of contemporary (modern) architecture.

Contemporary architecture doesn't have to be ugly or overpowering, what you are referring to is BADLY DESIGNED architecture (and we haven't seen the plans or elevations have we?)

I would just like to make this distinction.

how do you think this will effect the businesses on rowena during constuction? there is already no parking. how about the all the debris and work trucks taking up space? plus, once the condo is erected it will completly block the neighbors visibility from the street. i cannot even imagine what kind of traffic nightmare we will be dealing with when 75 plus cars are trying to turn left onto rowena during peak hours from the condo.
